The genus name Vaccinium is thought to be derived from the Latin bacca, meaning “olive”, “berry”, or “any round fruit”, or alternatively, vacca, meaning “cow”. The species name myrtillus is Latin for “little myrtle” owing to the resemblance of the leaves and fruits to those of myrtle trees. The medicinal activity of bilberry has been since at least the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, the fruit was commonly recommended as a way of inducing menstruation and solving "women's ailments." By the 16th century, bilberry became a popular treatment for curing diarrhea, and during the 18th century, bilberries were widely described in herbals and medicinal treatises as a cure for intestinal disorders and mouth ulcers. Blueberries are widely known as "superfoods" due to their richness in compounds with various biological properties and highly beneficial effects on human health. Blueberry cultivation, which started in America, is continued in many parts of the world with many varieties today
