Glycyrrhiza Glabra L. (Licorice) is a plant belonging to the Fabaceae (Legumes) family, which has been cultivated for centuries, mainly in Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean basin. G. Glabra, whose Latin name is 'sweet root' and whose homeland is known to be Russia and China, is cultivated in our country, especially in Eastern Anatolia.
In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice root has been used as an expectorant in the treatment of chronic cough thanks to its fibrous structure and toxin expectorant content. It is also known to be good for asthma, colds, stomach ailments and even depression. In addition, the cough suppressant and anti-constipation properties of G. Glabra, which also found its place in ancient Arabic medical books, were frequently mentioned.
G. Glabra, which can be used in different forms, is commonly used in dried tea form. In our country, licorice sherbet, which is frequently consumed in Çukurova region and obtained by boiling the root, stands out as a sweet and refreshing drink.
