Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor L.) is widely cultivated in the temperate zones of Europe and Asia and in our country. The plant, which is cultivated in many European countries, is found in Thrace, Northern Anatolia and Western Anatolia in our country.
It is widely used internally and externally by the people. Its internal use for constipation and urinary tract problems and the use of its infusion for skin irritations, burns and eczema have been reported in monographs.
Wild Pansy, an annual herbaceous plant, is a very rich plant in terms of chemical content. It contains flavonoids such as apigenin, kemferol, rutin, violatin, vitexin, isovitexin, as well as violanin, ascorbic acid, tocopherol and phenolic acids from the anthocyanin family. It also contains mucilage, salicylic acid and its derivatives, and polysaccharides.
These natural chemicals give the plant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic and diuretic properties.
Studies have shown that Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor L.) has a diuretic effect on upper respiratory tract disorders and cystitis, which is common in women. It is also known to be added to preparations used for digestive and respiratory problems.
For external use, studies have shown that it can be used for skin problems such as sore throat, particularly as it has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In vitro experiments have shown that extracts from the aerial part have antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Candida albicans, especially during the flowering period.
According to in vivo experiments in monographs, in animal studies where eczema was induced, there was an improvement in mice fed with pansies.
Although there is no product in our country with the indication of Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor L.), various preparations are used in Europe.
