The ivy leaf has been used since ancient times, but the phytotherapeutical books of the 16th century would describe very different indications. Ivy is stated to possess mild expectorant, anticatarrhal, astringent, vulnerary, diuretic and stomachic properties. Traditionally, it has been used for bronchitis, tinnitus, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids, cystitis, gastritis, and specifically for chronic bronchial catarrh. In European traditional medicine the plant has been used for ailments of the grastrointestinal tract and calculosis. It is also used by external applications as an antalgic for neuralgia and rheumatism, and as a revulsive for ulcers and burns. The leaves were used as analgesic and anti-inflammatory, the leaves and berries were taken orally as an expectorant for the treatment of cough and bronchitis. The boiled leaves of Hedera helix was applied to the part of the body afflicted, fight ringworm, scabies and worm.
