TRADITIONAL USES

TRADITIONAL USES

The physician and botanist Andrea Mattioli (1501–1577) imported the plant from Constantinople to Italy and discovered its astringent properties and its benefits for the circulatory system. However, the plant was used in the past mainly as a febrifuge, while it was initially used for hemorrhoidal problems in France during the 1800s. The species is native to Asia Minor and derives its name from the habit of feeding sick horses with the seeds. It is also commonly grown in temperate Europe as an ornamental plant.
